Very Still And Hard To See

The Lex Theatre
6760 Lexington Ave Los Angeles

Originally commissioned and work-shopped by American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco, this darkly humorous new work inventively spins elements loosely inspired by modern ghost stories with an exploration of the Japanese folk tales "Of a Mirror & a Bell" and "Yuki-onna". Everyday situations from riding in a hotel elevator to preparing for a blind date take on supernatural qualities. The captivating characters encounter mystical forces that collapse the distance between the real and the surreal. This magical, funny, and sometimes mind-bending creation by acclaimed playwright Steve Yockey will take you on an exhilarating, visceral journey.

  Review Round-Up

LA Weekly - Recommended

"... Steve Yockey’s series of haunted tales is strung together with expert eeriness by director Michael Matthews."

Backstage - Recommended

"...Director Michael Matthews has given the piece a terrific stylized, ritualistic production on the uncredited set, which features two huge concentric circles drawn by the actors on the floor. The script combines comedy with menace, short on explanations but full of startling implications."

Stage and Cinema - Not Recommended

"...Even with some wonderful dialogue, the playwright’s self-indulgent construction eschews an overarching story, which renders it impenetrable and not worth recommending, but if you want to witness the wickedly inventive Story Theatre-like staging of Michael Matthews, consistently the best director in Los Angeles, then by all means go to Hell."

Stage Scene LA - Recommended

"...The theatrical equivalent of Disneyland’s Space Mountain, i.e. equal parts excitement, terror, and glee, Very Still And Hard To See provides thrills galore under Michael Matthews’ masterful direction."

LA Stage Times - Recommended

"...Yes, this is a horror play, about an extremely haunted hotel that’s located smack dab over hell. And it’s a very stylish play as directed by Michael Matthews. Potentially, it has a greater populist appeal than Heavier Than… In fact, program it in September, and it probably would become a cult classic as the Halloween mood descends on theatergoers."
