"...The promise of the show's opening number "Magic to Do" was lived up to with Houdini-esque virtuosity. "Pippin" was a show that inspired teens from the 1970s to pursue the dream of singing and dancing on Broadway. This entrancing revival will no doubt inspire a new generation to do the same. Don't miss it."

"...Therein lies the captivating power of Pippin. It reels you in with jaw-dropping circus acts, complex music and choreography (by Chet Walker in the style of Bob Fosse, the director of the original production), lush settings (by Scott Pask) and well-timed jokes, but there's a serious undercurrent to the experience that makes it mean something."

"...Even with my disappointment in the second act, I still have to recommend this Pippin, for the first act in general and Andrea Martin's "No Time at All" in particular. It is rare that I get so effusive over a single song that I'm willing to overlook my substantial issues with the remainder of a musical. But this is one of those rare moments of theatrical magic in which performer, role, and staging come together to create something genuinely special."

"...In her marvelously inventive, re-imagined update-which was first developed at Harvard's American Repertory Theater-Paulus brilliantly orients the topsy-turvy machinations of the entire story (written by Roger O. Hirson) within the canvas-lined confines of a big-top circus. Here, the over-the-top performance troupe that "guides" our hero's search for self-fulfillment aren't merely just actors (or "players") but are also all agile, athletic circus performers that tumble, leap, and balance themselves for our (and Pippin's) entertainment pleasure."

"...However, I for one am a huge fan of the surprisingly complex implications of the story, as well as its statements on concepts as vague as "happiness" and "fulfillment." It can be argued it stands for the power of imagination or the forces of adulthood. The beauty lies in the interpretation, and audience members can interpret the ending and the role of the circus troupe in their own way. Or they can ignore all that and have a blast at this incredible show."

"...But what makes this revival worthy of its accolades is the new context created by the big-top acrobatic show that surrounds Pippin, courtesy of Gypsy Snider from the Montreal circus troupe, Les 7 Doigts de la Main. If you've never heard of Fosse and you don't care for musicals, the death-defying stunts and derring-do are sure to get your heart thumping. And if they don't, then you'd better check your pulse."

"...A large group of talented and exciting performers that are called the Players round out the great cast that bring so much excitement to this production that is directed by Diana Paulus."

"...This "Pippin" is enough to make a person want to run away and join the circus. Watching an extraordinary young man attempt that very feat will have to suffice."

"...Paulus's staging ideas aren't just showbiz set pieces, though they work very well on that level. More important, they literalize the fertile central metaphor that life can and should be lived on the edge, with boldness and risk. That theme has always been present in the libretto and lyrics, but never truly felt. The circus acts get us viscerally involved in Pippin's struggles, and thus his story takes on unanticipated importance. Something's at stake here, which has never before been true of Pippin in my experience. Paulus even manages to invest the ending with Beckettian despair. It's really awesome stagecraft."

"...This revival features far more color and is bigger and louder than its predecessor, but still has what makes the original so great: great songs and a relatable and engaging story."

"...Opening night of PIPPIN at the Pantages was a smashing success, full of incredibly fresh and hilarious performances, fabulous Fosse choreography, magical effects, and some pretty amazing circus acrobatics by Les 7 doigts de la main! Andrea Martin stopped the show and received a standing ovation following her big feature, "No Time At All" and John Rubinstein is hands down the kookiest Charlemagne you've ever seen (with half his marbles left, I think). Believe me, you want to see this show so get your tickets now."

"...I could go on and on about every aspect of this show, suffice it to say I have not enjoyed myself quite so much at the theatre in years, truly. I thoroughly recommend this show, in fact I insist that you go out and buy your tickets immediately! You would be foolish to miss such a rare opportunity to witness such a collision of perfect events."

"...So what did I think of this retelling of Pippin's journey. Much of it worked, and much of it worked well. Some things didn't."
