A magical mystery tour spanning decades and continents, Pericles hits the high seas for the exciting tale of a prince, his wife and their daughter, all separated by the whims of fate -- and the hands of evildoers. The play culminates in one of the most joyful reunions Shakespeare ever wrote, with its powerful message about refugees all the more timely. The Porters of Hellsgate are on a years-long mission to stage the Bard's entire canon, and this latest show at the Whitmore-Lindley Theatre Center in NoHo is their 24th production. Artistic Director Charles Pasternak reunites with actor Leon Russom (Prison Break, The Big Lebowski), who won raves when they teamed for Henry V in 2014.

"...Luke McClure makes a noble and intelligent Pericles, though he plays him as a little too self-possessed to be very sympathetic. If the show's casting can be startlingly uneven in spots, the direction puts players in the right place at the right time. Alexandra Wright is particularly sharp and truthful, as usual. In this all-in staging, the ensemble creates mood mostly organically, making some effective sound effects with just their mouths. The group movement reveals space with consistent alacrity. Jessica Pasternak's costumes are simple and expressive. And at over two hours, the show doesn't feel long, which is the best thing I've ever said about a Shakespeare show with this many puns in it."

"...This is a play well worth seeing. The Porters of Hellsgate have produced a reverent yet spirited version of "Pericles," with powerful choruses and wonderfully poignant performances. What could have easily been over the top is handled with subtlety and candor. The result is a "Pericles" full of life and not weighed down by the death. So we are entertained as well as connected to the plight of these very real and surprisingly modern characters, especially considering they are based on people who walked this earth millennia ago."

"...As a theatre critic, I've reviewed a lot of Shakespeare's plays, but this is the first time I've seen anyone, in this case George Wilkins, credited as a collaborator in the writing. Apparently, it is now a matter of scholarly record that Wilkins may have written as much as two thirds of this play. Perhaps this accounts for the rarity of its presentation. Thankfully, the current terrific production by the Porters of Hellsgate demonstrates what a rare delight it can be."
