Part 3: The World Premiere of Othello/Desdemona

Part 3: The World Premiere of Othello/Desdemona

City Garage Theatre
2525 Michigan Ave Santa Monica

Even among the classics, Shakespeare's Othello stands apart for its passion, its sense of danger, and its continued relevance within contemporary society. City Garage takes the Bard's timeless tale and pushes it even further into the realm of modernity with the world premiere of Othello/Desdemona. Experiencing his own identity crisis, Othello rejects his status as a servant of the Venetian State and begins to identify as white in order to gain political power. Meanwhile, his wife Desdemona faces her own internal struggle as a caged Lolita, a spoiled woman-child who lusts for her old lover and hungers for fame. Egged on by a punk-rock Iago and transgender Emilia, these tragic characters find themselves trapped in a complicated web of love -- and no one is escaping unscathed. This innovative production tackles issues of racism, white privilege and self-identity at Santa Monica's City Garage at Bergamot Station Arts Center.
