Nat Turner: Following Faith Reviews
LA Weekly- Not Recommended
"...Every time a character appears on stage, it's as if he or she is bearing the weight of the world. There's no deftness, and while one can't expect lightness in this sort of story, the ponderousness becomes increasingly off-putting. The pacing is sluggish as well, with even the least important patches of dialogue declaimed as if they were some weighty Shakespearean monologue."

"...Director Dan Martin stages what is in many ways a superlative production, with an accomplished supporting ensemble who (with a single exception) etch even the cameo roles with clarity and skill. Their disciplined talent goes a very long way towards compensating for this overwritten and sometimes pontificating melodrama, whose repetitive scenes and didactic moralizing belabor the obvious."

"...In any case, if there is such a Black-themed theatrical trend, Following Faith is part of and reflective of what's going on in our culture now. Unfortunately, it does not do General Nat and his courageous unshackled followers justice. Having said that, it may be worth seeing for theatergoers interested in the subject matter, especially those who know little about one of the most electrifying moments in American history: When way down yonder in the land of cotton, the last boldly decided they shall be first. At least this play, flawed as it may be, shines a light on those unforgotten, brave freed slaves who declared in 1831, straight outta Southhampton, that yes indeed, Black Lives Matter, and Justice too - or else!"

"...It's fair to say, then, that Nat Turner: Following Faith is an epic work, an historical drama conceived and executed on a grand scale. The play, now in a world premiere run at Theatre/Theater, was directed by Dan Martin, among whose acting credits are stints with the famed Negro Ensemble Company in New York. Only a seasoned pro like him could have tackled such an immense project and brought it off so well. The man deserves some kind of an award."
