The Ides of March arrive dangerously early as Julius Caesar, William Shakespeare's harrowing study of an assassination and its poisonous consequences, comes to Casa 0101 Theater. More scandalous than Scandal and more devious than House of Cards, Shakespeare's ruthless political thriller finds Caesar facing a life-and-death struggle for power with his former "friends, Romans, countrymen" Brutus and Cassius. The actions of these friends-turned-conspirators set off a civil war at the dawn of the Roman Empire. Now Casa 0101 Theater stages an exciting new production as a part of Encuentro 2014, a historic, month-long theater festival co-presented by the Los Angeles Theater Center and the Latino/a Theatre Commons.

"...On Cesar Holguin's excellent unit set with Chicano-style graffiti on the walls, the action, under Robert Beltran's sporadic direction, using mostly-untried actors who studied for eight months how to perform Elizabethan theatre, attempted, with varying degrees of success, to create a unified whole. "...Beltrán plays the action on a series of platforms designed by Cesar Retana-Holguin, simple and effective with graffiti-like red and black screens behind. Costumes, designed by Ábel Alvarado, are a mixture of contemporary clothes and toga-like cloaks that are simple and non-intrusive. Casa 0101 is a small theater. He has the actors approach the audience to speak their lines. They are aided by body mics, but they speak Shakespeare's language so clearly, so effortlessly, with respect and relish, that the mics are unnecessary. Beltrán has directed them in simplicity of action, too, and there is never any wasted action. This is a play about thought, even though the bloody action was probably emphasized (you had to keep the groundlings happy), when it was originally produced, 400 years ago."

This is a new and different kind of Julius Caesar, and it is slightly truncated but overall a very satisfying night of theatre. I attended the near opening night of the show and I suspect by the time you run to see it, the play will have settled into a remarkable show."
