Winner of a 2014 Hollywood Fringe Festival Encore Producer's Award, this fresh take on the timeless tale presents the play as Wilde might've written it today, with the four lovers recast as dashing gay men. Set in a world that shares our own modern-day obsession with appearances, money and social status, The Importance of Being Earnest follows two couples as they fight for the right to be engaged -- a satirical plot that is given a timely reworking in this Queer Classics production.

"...His pacing, tonality, and orchestration of bits also are uneven, veering from the meticulous to the messy. Fortunately for him, and for us, some of his cast provides such brilliant renderings that for long stretches, the jarring elements are quite overcome by excellent line readings and physicalizations. It certainly provides more laughs than a night in Reading Gaol."

"...On the other end of the spectrum budget-wise is Queer Classics' abridged, more spare production, now playing in Hollywood, which casts Cecily and Gwendolyn as men. While the four leads have a solid grasp of who their characters are at their core, director Casey Kringlen goes for the easy laugh too often, opting for crass staging instead of letting Wilde's words do the heavy lifting. While it's interesting to see the relationships in a same-sex context (which is especially fitting given Wilde's sexual preferences), the choice to stage it with gay couples negates Wilde's razor-sharp insights into gender politics."

In the roles of the objects of their affection, Jordan and McCulley mine the gender-bending gambit for maximum hilarity, and a huge dose of camp. Lending able support are Nancy La Scalla, Megan Soule, and Jeff Elam as elder characters, while Eric Deloretta evokes laughs in two servant roles. This is a promising bow for an adventurous new company."
