Henry IV, Part I Reviews

"...Whether the Antaeus Company is cleverly trying to tell a bigger modern story through Shakespeare's late 16th-century construct or carelessly reducing the bigger history to a smaller one, the basic tenets remain confirmed and well presented. Hal grows up, Henry loosens up, and Falstaff is just funny enough. The bottom line here is that you don't need to be an English historian to enjoy watching Henry IV Part 1…but it might help."

"...Antaeus – a clever font of talents, both before us and as support – has presented us a terrific partner-cast production of 1 Henry IV on their tiny stage. Both casts were directed by veteran Michael Murray on Francois-Pierre Couture's excellent minimalist set, under Michael Gend's expressive lighting - they do spend their limited monies wisely there."

"...Anteaus's "Henry IV, Part I" is generally uninspired, difficult to access and, frankly, tedious. The production's insistence on revering the text without meeting it halfway puts insurmountable demands on the audience and makes the world of the play (if there is any) extremely difficult to access."

"...This is a compelling and poetic version of what could easily have been, in lesser hands, mere syllables and syntax."

"...While the set is minimal and the costuming takes the form of dark modern suits and plain dresses, there is certainly enough in the drama to keep us entertained. With nefarious plotters, the swordfights and especially the antics of Falstaff, Henry IV is a must-see for Shakespeare fans as well as those who simply appreciate the art of acting and want to see one of this stage season's most titanic performances."
