Danny and the Deep Blue Sea Reviews
Broadway World- Highly Recommended
"...Every once in a while, I am treated to an amazing evening of theater featuring actors who step outside of themselves and totally encompass their characters every single moment they are onstage. With performances as riveting as any I have seen, Tanna Frederick and Robert Standley are marvels to behold as unlikely lovers Roberta and Danny in John Patrick Shanley's DANNY AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA, brilliantly directed with soulful abandon by Carl Weathers at the Edgemar Center for the Arts in Santa Monica. The Rainbow Theatre Company production is the show to see this summer!"

"...The two-person cast does a bang-up job of portraying these unhappy people. Talented director Carl Weathers helms the production with a firm hand as he tries to make these characters lovable to a compassionate audience. Mark Kanieff's set design couldn't be better as he takes Danny and Roberta from the seedy bar to an equally seedy bedroom. Derrick McDaniel's lighting and Christopher Moscatiello's sound keep the focus on the interior life of these two individuals - neither one of whom seems capable of the insight that dawns after a half hour of interaction."

"...Robert Standley gives the character of Danny substance, strong physical attributes, and an emotional being that is living in the now-it is a terrific performance. Still he could add to the character. Danny's masculinity is called into question on a number of occasions-doubts about making love "I can't do that", playing with dolls, "I wanted to be the bride," and being called a "beefcake faggot." Inner doubt plays well with this character, after all he is still living at home, with his mother."
Its Not About Me- Recommended
"...This rendition of Danny and the Deep Blue Sea is entertaining: the story is interesting and different, the performances are spot-on, the direction (by Rocky actor, Carl Weathers) makes it all move, and the set is exactly perfect, especially for the small space. (This show is in the smaller theatre in the Edgemar Center. But that's good because the noise of the creepy eatery next door doesn't spill through the walls on that side of the edifice.) It's a perfect summer's day or evening's entertainment, especially paired with the happening Santa Monica area, which I heavily suggest you explore before or after the show. (Or both!)"
