Carmen

Carmen

Dorothy Chandler Pavilion
135 N. Grand Avenue Los Angeles

With its dazzling costumes and choreography, passion-filled story, famous score (you've definitely heard "The Toreador Song") and Grammy-winner Ana María Martínez starring in the title role, the LA Opera's production of Bizet's Carmen is sure to be a stunner. An alluring Spanish gypsy girl with a hot temper, Carmen seduces the innocent Don José, who gives up everything for her, leaving his former love, rebelling against his superiors and joining a gang of smugglers. But Carmen's not exactly the type to settle down. So when she tires of him and moves on to the bullfighter Escamillo, Don José is driven by betrayal and jealousy to exact violent revenge. One of the most sought-after sopranos in the world, Martinez has appeared with respected companies like The Met, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera and Royal Opera House, and is making her much-anticipated return to the LA Opera, after her acclaimed portrayal of Cio Cio San in 2016's Madama Butterfly. The opera is sung in French with projected English translation.
